Summer Internship Program – Hoyas in Shanghai / Beijing

DRAFT

Hoyas in Shanghai/Beijing

Summer Internship Program Proposal

Aim:
In order to help give Georgetown students gain meaningful experience working in the China market before graduation, we propose launching Hoyas in Shanghai and Hoyas in Beijing Summer Internship Program. This program would leverage the Georgetown alumnae presence in Shanghai and Beijing to seek out internship opportunities for current Georgetown students, so that the students could learn more about Chinese work culture, the China market, and the relevant industry prior to graduation from Georgetown. This internship program would help make Georgetown students more competitive and informed job applicants after graduation, as well as likely expand Georgetown’s alumnae presence in Asia.

This program has relatively low administrative needs, modest budget considerations, and with university support/announcement making students aware of its existence and encouraging alumnae to participate, it could conceivably be launched as early as Summer 2010. The process and budget are outlined in greater detail below. Launching such a program would bring great benefit to the individual students as well as the university as a whole with an expanded alumnae presence in one of the largest economies in the world; moreover, failure to launch such a program leaves Georgetown students and Georgetown University at a competitive disadvantage, as other prestigious schools like Princeton and Yale already offer such programs.

Process/Timeline:

October 2009: Identify potential Shanghai employers, send emails asking if they are interested in hosting summer interns in 2010

November 2009: Wait to hear from potential employers on yes/no decision

December 2009: For the “yes” employers, ask them to fill out an application form detailing what internship job description, salary/benefits (if any), hiring manager’s name, office address, etc.

January 2010: Job listings get posted at Georgetown via Career Services (Suggested).

February 2010: Students apply directly to the Shanghai employers with their resume

March 2010: Shanghai employers make their final decision on who they want to hire.

April 2010: Students apply for China VISA, buy airplane ticket, make travel arrangements

May 2010: Students arrive in Shanghai

June 2010: Students start work on June 1

July 2010: Students work

August 2010: Students end work on Aug 1

Estimated Budget:

Housing- Housing is ultimately optional. Georgetown could leave the burden of housing on the individual student, but should Georgetown choose to provide funding, the cost depends on the real estate market at the time. (Yale students live in serviced apartments in Xuhui. Housing costs for a two bedroom apartment may range from $500-$1000 USD/month).
Summer Activities- Summer activity costs are also optional. Summer activities would need a modest budget allowance, and would vary depending on the number and type of activity undertaken.
Administrative Costs- Suggested to fund an assistant in Shanghai to help with paperwork, translations, logistics, etc. (Yale budgets USD $1,000 per student for summer activities and administrative burden).

Personnel (Suggested):

Administrative Assistant in Shanghai
Alumni Volunteers to Help Contact Alumnae Employers, Liaise with the Administrative Assitant
Support from the Career Center to Post Internship Opportunities
