What role will China’s green technology sector play in curbing climate change?
In tonight’s talk, Joanna Lewis will discuss her new book documenting the story of China’s rapid rise in the global wind power industry. Given China’s rapid progress in green technologies, innovation from China could play a crucial role in the global transition to a low-carbon economy. China’s wind industry not only provides a compelling example of technological leapfrogging, but also demonstrates the evolving nature of technology transfer and diffusion around the world, and provides valuable insight into the country’s domestic energy strategies and global positioning.
Given global concern about the impact of China’s rapidly increasing energy needs on global supplies, as well as China’s ability almost singlehandedly to change the global climate system, it is worth trying to understand how and why Beijing has embraced green innovation.
Joanna Lewis is Assistant Professor of Science, Technology and International Affairs (STIA) at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. Her research examines technology acquisition and innovation strategies for energy leapfrogging, drawing from cases of renewable energy development in emerging economies.
Recently published as Green Innovation in China: China’s Wind Power Industry and the Global Transition to a Low-Carbon Economy, her work combines approaches from energy systems and policy analysis, global environmental politics, and technology transfer and innovation studies.
Professor Lewis also serves as an international adviser to the Energy Foundation China Sustainable Energy Program and is a lead author of the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Previously, Lewis was Senior Fellow at the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, Technical Director at the Asia Society’s Initiative for U.S.-China Cooperation on Energy and Climate, and a researcher in the China Energy Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She has been a Visiting Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center, the East West Center, and Tsinghua University, and has worked at the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the National Wildlife Federation and the Environmental Defense Fund.
Lewis holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Energy and Resources from the University of California, Berkeley and A.B. in Environmental Science and Policy from Duke.
