Asia’s Silent Epidemic: Diabetes

Once considered a disease of the West, diabetes has become a growing epidemic in Asia . In 2006, 110 million people in Asia have diabetes, which directly contributed to 2 million deaths. China has emerged as the epicenter of the diabetes epidemic. Nearly 40 million people in China have diabetes, and that figure will increase sharply in coming years. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that diabetes and cardiovascular disease combined will cost about $555.7 billion in lost national income in China over the next 10 years. With a limited infrastructure for kidney dialysis and other advanced diabetes care, China is ill-equipped to deal with future challenges, particularly in the context of continued rapid urbanization.

The Harvard School of Public Health is actively working to combat diabetes in China and in the region. Currently, HSPH is discussing a proposal to establish an Asian Diabetes Prevention & Control Program at Harvard that includes research, training, and dissemination. This program will uniquely bring together the disciplines and leaders that will be needed to stem the challenge posed by this “silent epidemic.” Effective solutions would have profound benefits to individuals and societies in China and throughout Asia.
